International Literacy Day 2023: Theme, History and Significance

International Literacy Day is a day we celebrate every year on September 8th. We do this to talk about how important reading and writing are in our society.

The main goal of International Literacy Day is to show how reading and writing help people in many ways. It’s not just about knowing how to read and write, but also about using those skills to learn new things, get information, and be a part of society.

Being able to read and write is really important for things like reducing poverty, improving healthcare, making sure men and women have the same opportunities, and helping our planet grow in a good way.

The United Nations organization called UNESCO helps make International Literacy Day happen. They work with governments and communities around the world to make sure everyone gets a chance to learn to read and write.

Even though we’ve made progress, there are still around 773 million adults who can’t read and write properly.

This day reminds us that reading and writing are basic rights for all people. It tells us that we need to keep working to make sure everyone can learn these important skills and make their lives better.

Every year, International Literacy Day has a different theme to talk about different parts of reading and education.

In 2023, the theme is “Promoting literacy for a world that is changing: Building the foundation for societies that are peaceful and can last.”

This theme reminds us that reading and writing are important for making our world better and more peaceful.

International Literacy Day started because UNESCO said September 8th is the day to think about how important reading and writing are for all people. UNESCO decided this in 1966. They wanted to make sure everyone knows how reading and writing help us keep our dignity and rights.

The idea for International Literacy Day came from a meeting in Tehran in 1965. In 2015, it also became part of the United Nations’ plan for making the world better.
