Cover Story of Bill Stankiewicz | President | CEO of Savannah Supply Chain

I want to say its an honor to be asked to write about my background in this wonderful publication. Many thanks again to Shanu Mathew, Chairman & Founder for brutnow Media Company and Keepcastle Group. My work in logistics started at an early age. My family imigrated to the USA from Poland after WWII. My parents met in the military and my father was a POW when the Germans invaded Poland, he escaped and was later then caught by Russia and jailed. Later when Germany invaded Russia, my father was released and served with the British and foungt in many campaigns such as Monte Casino in Italy. I was borned in the USA, my father worked in warehousing for FW Woolworth Company in Chicago, my mother was a janitor for 25 years at Union Carbide.  We did not have any money for college and I started working  in High School fulltime on 2nd shift while I was in school.  I saved all my money working as a Die Setter in the can plant called Armstrong Container. I stayed at the plant for several years while attending night school. Many managers told me your our best mechnic, quit college, but I wanted to continue my education.  I later graduated a few years later from DePaul University with a Bachelor of Science Degree. My bio is below and does list the jobs I have had over the past 30 years.  Now as a President for Savannah Supply Chain, I work as the lead consultant on projects with in the Southeast United States.

People call me The Savannah Supply Chain Guy because of the solutions I provide on warehouse selections & quick transload transport providers. Extensive experience within the supply chain matrix, “Port to Consumer”, delivering an seamless network of value for numerous industries.

Bill has 30+ years’ experience in Industrial Facility Operations and Food Grade Distribution He has worked at Savannah Supply Chain as a consultant here in Savannah Georgia. On weekends Bill teaches as Adjunct Professor at Savannah Technical College the OS & OOG Freight Program for Pilot Escort and Fork Lift Safety Programs for certification and distribution operations.

Bill was recipient of the PepsiCo-Frito-Lay Service and Quality Awards at the 13th Annual Contracting Manufacturing Meeting in Plano, Texas. The Service Award was presented to Shippers Warehouse of Georgia with the following criteria – 2010 vs. 2011 Volume in cases & pounds, Perfect Order Compliance & Average Detention Dollars per load. Shippers Warehouse of Georgia was presented the award due to their accomplishments during 2010—102% volume increase 2010 vs. 2011, 99.92% perfect order ccompliance, $.053 average detention dollars per load and great customer service by all.

The Quality Award was presented to Shippers Warehouse of Georgia with the following criteria—Improvement on consumer complaints from the previous year, foreign matter and AIB audit score. Shippers Warehouse of Georgia was presented the award due to their accomplishments during 2010—52% reduction on consumer complaints, no foreign matter and an average score of 925 on their AIB audits – both audits were unannounced.

In the past he has worked as Executive Vice President for American Packing and Crating. APC is a full service 3PL export packing and shipping company, now located in six major cities: Norfolk, VA, Savannah, GA, Ft. Lauderdale/Miami, FL, Dallas, Houston, TX, and Phoenix AZ. American Packing & Crating offers several shipping related services including crating, packaging, and containerization to ensure that a product is packaged to withstand the most difficult part of its journey. Our crating services include lagging of cable reels, cradles and saddles, and shipping skids with tie downs, as well as open frame, plywood, or reusable crates.

Bill has worked as Senior Vice President for HRC Logistics that is a 3PL Logistics organization dealing with imports/exports, custom bonded projects, trans-loading, hazardous materials distribution and transportation,

My most recent experience has included working for Coastal Logistics Group as Vice President Sales and Operations. Responsible for CLG’s Distribution Support Services (DSS). I instituted business metrics for all accounts, retrained all warehouse associates in GMP and proper utilization of equipment. Increased shipping accuracy in all facilities. Helped Identify improvement opportunities and manage initiatives inclusive of standardizing quantities, ASN integration, scan-based inventory, and managed inventory programs for customers. I lead the process integration of continuous improvement into the operating culture. Utilized measurement processes, best practices, innovation, technology, benchmarking and ongoing training to obtain a process driven, problem solving environment.  Prior to CLG I worked as a Director of Operations for Barloworld Integrated Solutions division in Morrow Georgia handling the Tensar Corporation Account. Before my role at Barloworld I worked at Shippers Warehouse.

As Vice President & General Manager for Shippers Warehouse. My responsibilities include Business Development and Operations Management for all Southeast facilities which include all co-packing operations for Frito Lay North America, all overflow distribution for Nestles & management of 44 other large public & contract accounts. Our packaging operations handle over 2-3 billion bags/cases shipped per year in operations. Shippers Warehouse is the largest privately held regional 3PL provider in the Southwestern United States. Prior to Shippers Warehouse Bill was Managing Director for Atlanta Supply Chain with offices based out of South Georgia.  Projects have included supporting the FEMA “TAV-Total Asset Visibility” efforts on inventory control, transportation & logistics for: Fort Gillem Army Base Forest Park Georgia, Maxwell Air Force Base-Montgomery Alabama, Camp Beauregard-Pineville, LA., and Fort Worth Texas FEMA Logistics Center at 501 West Felix Street, US Department of Homeland Security. Ft. Gillem is a 1,500-acre army base located in Forest Park, a suburb located approximately eleven miles south of Atlanta. Ft. Gillem is a satellite installation of Headquarters, U.S. Army Garrison, Ft. McPherson. Fort Gillem is home to the First U.S. Army, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (Atlanta Distribution Center), 3D Military Police Group (CID) United States Army Criminal Investigation Command, 2nd Recruiting Brigade, 52nd Ordnance Group and the Equipment Concentration Site for the 81st Regional Support Command, and many other Army, Department of Defense and government agencies. Atlanta Supply Chain projects have included LTL/TL, Ground Expedite, and Ocean rate negotiations for several US domestic customers. Bill has worked with MBE-Minority Based Enterprise companies with distribution and fulfillment projects for Coca-Cola Company, Honda, Toyota, etc.

Bill Stankiewicz has worked as the Corporate Transportation Executive for Con-Way Air in a strategic position. He is responsible for negotiations of all Corporate Airline, Line-Haul and Cartage Service and Pricing Contracts of major Partners, & assisting the Regional Field Service Centers. This also includes working with contract negotiations for sales organization with new customers. Con-Way Air Quality Assurance & Pricing Departments report to Bill also. He is based in Atlanta, Georgia.

Prior to Con-Way AIR  Stankiewicz worked as the Corporate Director of Transportation and Logistics for Eagle Global Logistics.  He served in a strategic management position in helping to expand logistics supplier partnerships in the current account base through technology and supply chain management.  Stankiewicz is based in Houston, Texas.  A 22-year logistics industry veteran, he is responsible for business development support, identifying target markets and managing successful startup support and assisting in the implementations of new major accounts.

He reported to John McVaney, Executive Vice President of Logistics, Eagle Global Logistics Worldwide Division.  Stankiewicz has had extensive experience in managing multi facility distribution networks in both a strategic planning and transportation operations role.  His experience has included benchmarking assignments in Europe and the Middle East-United Arab Emirates, pertaining to Texas Instruments, Apple Computer, ICL, and IBM. While in Dubai, Bill set up product storage for supplies and furniture for the “Burj Al Arab Hotel” as one of the projects there.

Prior to joining Eagle Global Logistics, Stankiewicz worked as North America Operations Manager for Redwood Systems.  He was responsible for the transportation management of Sprint, Nortel, JoAnn Fabrics and Philips Consumer Electronics.   Stankiewicz managed all alliances and partnerships for the division and reported to a senior vice president.  He is well-versed in warehouse operations, transportation management, quality control, productivity improvement and customer service. Redwood Systems was a wholly owned subsidiary of Consolidated Freightways. Prior to joining Redwood Systems, Stankiewicz worked as a supply chain management consultant to medium and large-sized multinational companies, and as a general manager for Exel Logistics in Roseville, Calif.  At Exel he managed all distribution and transportation for Hewlett-Packard’s Support Materials Organization.  This included multiple distribution sites, international inventory management in France and Germany, demanufacturing of PC’s and CFTZ, California Free Trade Zone forHP’s monitor shipments with a staff of over 1250 employees.

Stankiewicz is a frequent contributor to numerous business and industry publications, and has been a featured speaker at logistics events and conferences throughout the industry.  This has included speaking on transportation topics related to the Internet at the World Logistics Congress in Miami and at eCommerce 2000, March 2000 in San Francisco.  Stankiewicz is a graduate of DePaul University business school.  In September of 2000, he addressed the attendees at ePurchasing Week, a conference for senior level executives, in Chicago, Illinois.

In June of 2002 Bill was a speaker at Eye for Transport in San Francisco, California.  For the NAFTA Conference in McAllen, Texas in 2001 and 2002 Bill was involved with the host University and in supporting the efforts. In 2001 and 2002 Bill helped in a Restore Center for Habitat for Humanity in Houston and worked as a mentor for about 120 students that assisted in the project for the University of Houston.

Bill also spoke on Supply Chain Topics in Atlanta 2007 for Eye For Transport Summit and at the Green Transportation Conference in San Francisco on 9/26/2007. He also spoke at Clayton State University on November 21, 2008 on Supply Chain Economics with information on Article 7;UCC-Uniform Commercial Code.

Bill was also on the Board of Directors for the St.Vincent DePaul Foodbank in Roseville California helping with the fund raising and meals to the poor program. While based in Northern California he was successful in fund raising programs for the Crusade of Mercy and helped Father Dan Madigan at the Sacramento Food Bank also. For 2008, Bill is a member of the Board for WORKTEC on also an Advisory Board Member for Boys and Girls Club for Metro Atlanta-Clayton County Chapter.

Here in 2017-Present, Savannah Bill is on the non-profit boards for WorkSource Coastal, Savannah Traffic Club, Savannah Logistics Technology Corridor Task Force, APICS-American Production Inventory Society SAV Chapter, GMA- Georgia Manufacturing Alliance. 

Bill is also a volunteer teacher at Parents University helping Michael Oneal.
